7 Myths About Cats

I am apart of a family who loves dogs. Man's best friend... protector of the home when we're away... the first line of defense against strangers. Don't get me wrong, I like dogs, but I love cats. So, when I informed my parents that I had recently adopted my cat, Carmen, the mythical flood gates were opened. No, I don't mean mythology, I mean the cat myths! One of the biggest ones was that 'cats suck the breath out of babies'. It was funny, until my parents told me that when I came to visit, the cat could not stay in the house. In shock, I pulled out my blog brainstorming pad (there is no technical name for it), and began to write. I felt the need to create a post about the most common myths about cats (and kitties!) So here is the first of a mini series on...

7 MYTHS ABOUT CATS! (and kitties!)

#1 Cats can't be trained...
ACTUALLY: Cats are highly intelligent animals. They can be taught, not only how to use a litterbox, but to sing and dance, too! Okay, maybe not sing and dance, but search YouTube for funny videos and you'll find cats doing everything from playing instruments to properly (and accurately) using the toilet!

#2 Unlike dogs, cats can have chocolate...
ACTUALLY: Nope. Cats can't have chocolate either. Milk chocolate has an alkaloid chemical called theobromine that is toxic to both cats and dogs. Dark chocolate has even more of it! So, no candy, hot chocolate, nil!

#3 Cats will suck the breath out of a baby...
ACTUALLY: Cats are snugglers. They love to cuddle against any body part that is the warmest, which happens to be the chest, neck, and head. This fact is most likely where this rumor (or as I call it, an urban cat legend) stems from. This ones a myth kiddos!

#4 Cats can have table food...
ACTUALLY: Table scraps are empty calories for cats. Feeding your new furry family member table scraps is a sure way to make them pack on unwanted pounds!

#5 Cats don't need exercise
ACTUALLY: Want your your kitty to stay healthy, well help them get some exercise. Keeping them indoors, take the time to roll around the floor with them and their toys!

#6 Garlic helps get rid of worms in cats
ACTUALLY: Garlic leads to anemia in cats

#7 Milk is a cats best friend...
ACTUALLY: Milk can cause diarrhea, and could eventually lead to an overweight kitty. This is due to the fact that cats have a hard time digesting dairy products.

Going to pay a visit to the Big Apple in the New Year!

This is Carrie Bradshaw's apartment and I cannot wait to go see this place! It's in New York (of course) and is open for tours! It's #224 on the Bucket List, by the way... I'm hoping to visit this place on my 3-day New York visit in the new year.  Wanna come with me?

My Favorite Sex and the City quotes...

*click the link to check out #223, "Watch the entire SATC series and why you should too."

So, if you don't know, I am a HUGE Sex and the City fan. I love the show and I love the movies. Some of my best friends live in far away states and I miss them all the time, but I can't always see them. This show is the next best thing for me. Moreover, I can relate to some of the things that the women on the show go through. There is always something to learn and some profound, eye-opening quip or piece of advice given, and that's what this post gives homage to!

Here are my favorite Sex and the City quotes:

"I like my money where I can see it- hanging in my closet." -Carrie

"I will not be the first to speak. And if he never calls me again, I will think of him fondly... as an asshole." -Carrie

"You can't swing a Fendi purse without knocking over 5 losers." -Samantha

"Maybe we can be each other's soulmates. And then we can let men just be these great nice guys to have fun with." -Charlotte

"I'm looking for love. Real Love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can't-live-without-each-other love." -Carrie

"I have never been able to be friends with an ex boyfriend. I met those couples who stay friends and I think how? How do they do that?" -Miranda

"It's hard to find people who will love you no matter what. I was lucky to find three of them." -Carrie

" We made a deal ages ago... men, babies, it doesn't matter. We're soulmates." -Samantha

So, what's your favorite one listed above? Is there a quote that you think I missed? Hit me up in the comments section! Have a great one, peeps!

#197 - Leave a positive note on a strangers windshield

There is sunlight in my soul today...

Yesterday was really hard. So hard, that I considered closing my blog, put my bucket list on hold, and return to corporate America. What brought that on? A couple of family members. I have always been a free-spirited traveller. I love moving around, seeing new places and meeting new people. It's humbling thinking back on all the people I've met and the countless emails and conversations from them, telling me how thankful they are for my encouragement, kindness, and giving. In spite of all of this, I've been called irresponsible and that I need to grow up, move somewhere (and stay there), and just get a job (by the way, everywhere I have ever lived, I've had work).

I shake off naysayers and negativity pretty well, but yesterday, something broke. I think it was my heart. Fortunately, I have a best friend (who's more like a sister) who was able to give me some really good advice. I call it my crash course in "Battling Life: Family 101".
my bestie and her baby girl being silly (:

So, what's the message here? Never give up on your dreams. Discouragement and pain comes from everywhere, including family. But you have to shake it off because at the end of the day, you only get one life.

So I blog on. And I will continue to do so, in the hopes that I will inspire you guys to get up and get living!

Peace and love, lovelies!

3 Beautiful Reading Nooks

Greetings again, peeps! So, if you haven't seen my post on my personal reading nook, check out this link:

A reading nook is simply a quiet place of relaxation and well, reading. It's a reprieve from the technological world we live in. I had a small television in mine with some of my favorite movies. But mostly, I just read my books and magazines and looked through family photo albums.

Here are photos and links of my favorite and most inspiring reading nooks. The photos contain links where you can click and find more info!

Hope you enjoyed this! Have any comments? Questions? Wanna share your makeover story? Feel free to post below!

Aerial Gallery

After going through photographs of my past travels, I came across a folder labeled "Flights". As it turns out, this folder has all of the shots I took of the sky on the many flights I have taken while traveling the country. It's true, my heart is in traveling the highway, but sometimes, it's quicker to fly!
So here are a few shots from my little folder. I hope you enjoy! (You're free to comment below!)

Song List Ideas for Your Next Road Trip

So, many of you know by now that I love to travel. Moreover, I love a good road trip! I was talking to one of my friends the other day and she didn't think that this was the time of year for road trips; that road trips were for the summer months only, but that's simply not true. I am a firm believer that any time, with proper planning a preparation, you can take a trip to anywhere you want. Besides, there's Christmas, Halloween, Kwanza, Hanukkah... okay, maybe that's a bit much, but you get what I'm getting at.

So, whenever you to take a road, one of the more important things you'll need is music! By the way, check out my post for an awesome list of things to take with you!

Here's a list of suggested tunes to rock out your road trip!:

  1. Have Love, Will Travel - The Sonics
  2. Shut Up and Drive - Rihanna
  3. Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett
  4. Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles
  5. Everyday is a Winding Road - Sheryl Crow
  6. Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers
  7. California - Phantom Planet
  8. The Way - Fastball
  9. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
  10. On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
  11. Ramblin' Man - The Allman Brothers Band
  12. Going Up the Country - Canned Heat
  13. Route 66 - Chuck Berry
  14. I've Been Everywhere - Johnny Cash
  15. The Pretender - Foo Fighters
  16. I Drove All Night - Celine Dion
  17. Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car - Billy Ocean
  18. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

So this is no 'ultimate' list. It's just one to get you started! Is there anything I should've added? Please, feel free to hit me up in the comment box below! I'd love to hear from you! Take care, peeps!

10 Things to Have in Your Car for Your Next Road Trip...

There's nothing like a good, long road trip. Going to a new place, seeing new things, or even going back to a place that you haven't been to in awhile, just to see how things have changed. I love traveling. I like to fly, but I love driving so I usually end up taking road trips.

One thing I have learned is there are a few things that you simply must have to make your trip easier. I mean, the obvious things are food and music, but there's a few more things that can make traveling easier. After all, you don't wanna have to fumble around in the backseat for a snack or catch the bottle of water rolling under the brake pedal!

So here's my list of things to have in your car on your next road trip:

  • Mini trash can: I went to our local dollar store and bought a cereal container, lined it with a grocery store bag and I was good to go! It's great for candy wrappers and empty potato chip bags. You don't want that stuff all over your floors and if you drive with the windows down like I do, the last thing you want is for trash to go flying out the window!
  • Mini cooler. Okay, so the mini cooler can be used to hold a few things. I keep 3 in my car because I'm a huge snacker: one for bars like fruit bars, cereal bars and candy bars; one for bottles of water; and one for sweets like skittles, M&Ms, and other candies that can easily and quickly melt
  • Aqua mist: facial spray. This will come in handy when you need to freshen your face. I give myself a light spray when I'm traveling alone and I get a little sleepy. I spray twice and if I'm still tired after that, I pull into the nearest motel and catch some Z's!
  • Baby wipes: These bad boys are handy for everything: cleaning your hands (because sticky fingers are the worst!), cleaning up quick spills (but never take your eyes off the road!), and they're great for wiping your face.
  • Listerine strips: I keep these for two reasons: fresh breath and a quick pick me up! For those solo trips, as in life, when I am bored, I get sleepy. So a great way I combat NOS, Nodding-Off Syndrome, is popping one of these hot little strips in my mouth. It does everything from wake me up to opening up my sinuses! Not too many, though.
  • Motion sickness remedies: I don't experience motion sickness because I'm always on the go, but when traveling with friends, you never know what you'll need. Besides, they don't take up much space.
  • Map: I'll never forget when I was driving home to Alabama in 2015. I was using the GPS on my phone when the battery died and it was so very dead that I couldn't turn the GPS back on until the battery was at least 11%. So now always keep one of these just in my car just in case... and I upgraded my phone!
  • Emergency car kits: Obviously!
  • Digital camera: Now, when I'm traveling solo, I don't take photos while I'm driving. I'll pull over and get the shot that I want. But for those wonderful times when I travel with friends, that's all I do. Snap photos!
  • A fun game: When traveling with a group of friends, playing games is an inevitable must. But whether you play car bingo, humdinger, or I Spy, this is definitely is a pasttime that will make your trip a memorable one!
And that's it! That's my list. I know the last one is not a tangible list item, but it's a must for travelers. Did I miss something? Hit me up below and clue me in! Thanks in advance! Have a great week, peeps!

My Summer Album Recap

This summer was amazing! I met a lot of great people, I had a lot of great fun and new experiences, and I really learned a lot about myself and the nature of people. Some people came and went after a few short months, some only lasted the summer. But the ones who have always been there for me remained.

Sometimes, people's intentions are less than noble, but there are lessons to be learned if you open your heart and mind. No matter who comes and goes,  no matter what, learn lessons from the good and bad and always, always remember the good times.
